Hinterland Light captures the shifting luminosity found beyond the coastline - where vegetation thickens, light filters through foliage and colour deepens toward dusk.
Rather than describing a literal scene, Stewart allows the sensation of place to unfold through layered material and tonal movement. Soft blushes and mineral creams rise through the upper surface, while deeper crimson and earthen notes gather below, creating a tension between light and density.
Gestural marks and embedded textures suggest flowering forms and undergrowth without fully defining them. The landscape is implied rather than fixed, inviting the viewer to move through the painting slowly, discovering areas of translucency, depth and release.
