In the Valley explores being held within landscape. Rather than depicting a specific place, the work emerged through layered material, tonal shifts and intuitive mark-making - allowing the suggestion of terrain, depth and atmosphere to surface gradually.
Deep greens, mineral blues and earthen undertones move across the canvas in strata, echoing valley floors, shadowed escarpments and the filtered light found between ridgelines. The surface reveals itself slowly - areas of density balanced by passages of openness - creating a sense of movement and stillness existing at once.
As with much of Stewart’s landscape series, the work is shaped as much by process as by place. Built through successive layers and responsive gestures, the painting invites close viewing, where embedded marks and subtle tonal variations become apparent over time.
At 100 × 100 cm, In the Valley holds a grounded, architectural presence - strong enough to anchor a room while maintaining a contemplative calm.
